Understanding Ultrasound
High-frequency sound waves are passed through the skin with a special device. The echoes produced when the sound waves strike certain tissues is converted to an image on paper or a TV monitor.
Pre-Exam Instructions:
- Breast: No Preparations.
- Biophysical: No Preparations.
- Renal: No Preparations.
- Transvaginal: No Preparations.
- Abdominal Sonogram: do not eat or drink for 8 hours prior to exam.
- Pelvic Sonogram: you must DRINK and RETAIN four 8 oz. glasses of water one hour before the exam. Do not empty bladder.
- Obstetrical:
- 1st Trimester: 32oz of water 1 hour prior to exam.
- 2nd Trimester: see above.
- 3rd Trimester: 2 8oz. glasses of water 1 hour prior to exam until pt. is about 7 months.
