Barium Enema
Purpose
The Barium Enema is a study of the large intestine.
Procedure
This may be different for each patient. As an example:
Barium is put into the rectum. The radiologist observes its flow through the large intestine and makes radiographs. The patient eliminates and another radiograph is made.
Preparation
May include restrictions on diet, an enema, etc. You will be given specific instructions regarding necessary preparations for your particular exam. See below.
GI Series
Purpose
The GI Series is an X-ray study of the esophagus (tube from stomach to mouth), stomach, intestines.
Procedure
This may be different for each patient. As an example:
Patient drinks some barium. Radiologist views stomach, etc., from various angles, makes a series of radiographs.
Preparation
May include restrictions on diet, an enema, etc. You will be given specific instructions.
Preparation for Barium Enema
- On the day before your examination, drink clear liquids only. Examples of clear liquids are clear broth, soda, tea, black coffee, apple juice and jello. Eat no solid foods. DRINK AS MUCH LIQUID AS POSSIBLE ALL DAY.
- At 5:00 PM take a Fleet enema or Dulcolax suppository.
- Two hours later drink 4 ounces of Neoloid, or 2 ounces of Caster Oil mixed with juice. If you wish, you may substitute five tablets of Dulcolax, 5 mg each.
- Light breakfast (Coffee or teas & toast) on the morning of your examination.
- On the morning of your examination, take repeated large warm water enemas. USE A LARGE ENEMA BAG. If possible, each enema you take should contain two quarts of water. These enemas should not be painful. If you experience any pain, stop and call our office.
- Repeat these large warm water enemas until the return is absolutely clear.
